CTL Logistics, the first freight carrier, will offer transport based on renewable energy from the sun and wind. The company has signed a long-term contract with PKP Energetyka as part of the Green Railway® programme. On the strength of this agreement, this year, 25 per cent of the energy collected by CTL Logistics will come from RES. In 2023, it will already be 50 per cent, and in 2025 the share of renewable energy will be 100 per cent.

Upgrading the railway to improve future passenger journeys remains crucial, and bank holidays are often the most productive time to carry out such works.…
The signing of the contract is another step in the cooperation of both companies, following the signing of the letter of intent regarding the Green Railway® programme, which took place in April last year. Thus CTL Logistics is becoming the first freight operator in Poland, whose transports will be powered by green energy from RES, which is in line with the assumptions of building a sustainable and environmentally friendly railway. A report prepared by the Institute for Market and Social Research (IBRIS) for the ProKolej Foundation shows that progressing climate change is prompting companies to look for more environmentally-friendly forms of freight transport. In rail transport, entrepreneurs from various industries see the greatest opportunities to reduce their carbon footprint. Increasing the use of rail transport and the share of RES from 40 per cent to 45 per cent in 2030 is also envisaged by the REPowerEU plan, recently adopted by the European Commission.
"I am very pleased that the first freight operator, CTL Logistics, is joining the Green Rail® programme. This agreement is an important step towards building a green and competitive rail sector. The use of energy from RES is nowadays not only an important factor in increasing the attractiveness of the transport offer but also an important step in strengthening the safety and energy independence of the railway sector. As indicated by the conclusions of a study prepared for the ProKolej Foundation, carbon efficiency is a criterion that business increasingly takes into account when planning logistics chains," says Wojciech Orzech, President of PKP Energetyka.

The new contract covers seven years, i.e., from 2024 to 2030, with an option to extend for a further three years until the end of 2033. On the other hand, based on an additional agreement, CTL Logistics obtained the possibility of purchasing energy that in 2022 came from OZE to the level of 25 per cent of its demand, which will increase to 50 per cent in 2023. In three years, i.e., from 2025, the transporter will be using energy fully based on OZE.
"At CTL Logistics, we are convinced that the future belongs to green and sustainable rail transport. We are building this future today, and with each passing year, we will move closer to the point where our transport will become completely climate-neutral. We are proud to sign an agreement with PKP Energetyka, thus becoming a leader in pro-environmental changes among Polish freight carriers," comments Grzegorz Bogacki, President of CTL Logistics. He adds: "The railway has many challenges to face, such as modernising the infrastructure or increasing the capacity of terminals to increase its competitiveness as a means of transport. As CTL Logistics we do everything so that our offer is attractive to clients, who emphasize quality, and safety but also look more broadly, at the future of ourselves and our planet. 100% green energy powering the trains of CTL Logistics already in 2025 is not theory but practice and a very real realisation by our Company of the climate and energy policy of the country".
The contract with CTL Logistics is the second, after the Łódź Agglomeration Railway, contract signed in the area of the sector programme Green Railway®, which PKP Energetyka coordinates within the sector organisation Centre for Railway Energy Efficiency.
