Renfe and CAF have concluded a contract for the supply of trains worth 197.2 million euros, according to which CAF should supply Renfe with 29 units of Cercanías EMUs, including the option to supply 9 more trains and wagons, 15 years of train maintenance and spare parts.

The new four-car trains will ensure maximum comfort for passengers. They will be equipped with the most modern functions and systems that will facilitate travel for people with reduced mobility, as well as those with visual or hearing impairments. At the same time, the trains will be equipped with safety systems to reduce the number of accidents.

Renfe bought new trains as part of its investment program, which it launched in 2019 intending to renew 50% of its fleet. Currently, the Spanish railway operator has an investment of 5.5 billion euros, which will be used to modernize 539 trains and locomotives. The investment program is expected to create approximately 52,000 job opportunities.

Renfe has signed two contracts worth 2.4 billion euros, one with Alstom to supply 152 high-capacity Cercanías trains worth 1.4 billion euros, while Stadler will supply 59 suburban trains worth a total of 998 million euros. Last December, Renfe ordered 49 Coradia Stream high-capacity trains from Alstom. A year earlier, Renfe signed a contract with Alstom for the delivery of 125 X'Trapolis trains intended for suburban transport for a total of 1.4 billion euros.

Renfe signed another contract with CAF for the supply of 31 metric gauge trains worth 287 million euros. The contract also includes train maintenance for 15 years. The trains will be able to run at a speed of 100 km/h on a hybrid drive, which is supposed to help reduce emissions.
