Last week marked a pivotal moment for Delhi as the city rolled out its pioneering Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), a collaboration aided by Deutsche Bahn's subsidiary, DB International Operations (DB IO). Launched in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this transit venture promises to revolutionize connectivity between Ghaziabad, Meerut, and Delhi, with full service projected by 2025.

Envisioned and managed by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), the RRTS, when fully functional, will span a vast 82 kilometers, featuring 25 stations and two depots. As a testament to its robustness, the RAPIDX initiative can accommodate approximately 800,000 passengers each day, reaching speeds of 160 km/h, an unprecedented feat for India. The initial phase, a 17-kilometer stretch between Delhi and Duhai, is now operational.

Deutsche Bahn's subsidiary, DB IO, undertook a pivotal role in July 2022 when it secured the contract for rail operations and maintenance for this expansive project. Their commitment has been evident in training the workforce, shaping the timetables, and systematically taking over the operations of trains, stations, and other essential facilities. This German-Indian partnership not only serves as a beacon for sustainable urban mobility but also facilitates knowledge exchange on cutting-edge technologies, many of which are poised for introduction in Germany. Niko Warbanoff, CEO of DB E.C.O. Group, expressed profound pride in their team's rapid accomplishments in Delhi and highlighted the synergistic potential of this Indo-German endeavor in advancing sustainable urban transport solutions.

Incorporating modern technologies, the RRTS boasts features like the ETCS Level 2/Hybrid Level 3 train control system, automated train operations, and LTE-based communications – elements that will soon be part of the German railway blueprint. “This is a moment the people of India have long awaited. Over the past four years, the NCRTC team has worked diligently to bring this system to life. The inauguration of this flagship project by the Indian Prime Minister heralds a new era for railways in India. In collaboration with our operating partner DB RRTS India, we strive to set new benchmarks in the quality of services provided to our commuters,” said Vinay Kumar Singh, CEO of NCRTC.
