Deutsche Bahn (DB) will no longer sell reception buildings at stations with immediate effect.
DB Board Member for Infrastructure Berthold Huber said on July 11: "Stations are the gateway for passengers to the train, and their buildings and forecourts are virtually the calling card of a place. They have to be friendly and inviting. That's why we're stopping the sale of our reception buildings. We want to design and develop the areas together with the cities and communities."

With the change, of course, all of DB's 700 or so reception buildings will remain in its ownership. A few properties are exempt from the sales stop, notably those where DB has already entered into contractual or pre-contractual commitments with the municipalities.
"To advance the mobility turnaround and increase acceptance of climate-friendly rail, we need attractive stations and a pleasant environment. Strong rail also includes inviting reception buildings. This is in the interest of the common good, and the communities benefit as well," says Berthold Huber.
Until now, DB has sold many former station buildings because they were difficult to maintain. Instead of selling them, DB is now focusing on further strengthening its station buildings. These are to be comprehensively developed. Good recent examples are the main stations in Halle (Saale), Cottbus or Saarlouis.
