Deutsche Bahn has announced that it will no longer sell reception buildings at stations, effective immediately.
According to Berthold Huber, the DB Board Member for Infrastructure, stations serve as the gateway for passengers to the train, and their buildings and forecourts are the calling card of a place. Thus, DB has decided to stop selling reception buildings, instead working with cities and communities to design and develop these areas in a friendly and inviting manner.

The change means that all of DB's 700 or so reception buildings will remain in the company's ownership. There are a few properties exempt from the sales stop, including those for which DB has already entered into contractual or pre-contractual commitments with municipalities.
Berthold Huber believes that in order to advance the mobility turnaround and increase acceptance of climate-friendly rail, attractive stations and a pleasant environment are necessary. Inviting reception buildings are an essential aspect of this, which is in the interest of the common good and will benefit communities as well. Until now, DB has sold many former station buildings due to difficulties in maintenance. However, instead of selling them, DB is now focusing on further strengthening its station buildings, comprehensively developing them as was done for the main stations in Halle (Saale), Cottbus, and Saarlouis, which serve as good examples.
