Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) has released its 14th Sustainability Report, highlighting the company's commitment to sustainable practices and greenhouse gas emission reductions.

In 2022, ÖBB's rail and bus transport services saved Austria around 4 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. The company's greenhouse gas emissions in 2022 were approximately 226,000 tonnes, a slight increase from 2021 due to increased passenger transport services. However, the environmental benefits of ÖBB's operations remain significant, with the Vienna-Frankfurt-Vienna flight connection producing roughly the same amount of CO2 emissions annually as the entire mobility sector of ÖBB.

ÖBB has fulfilled its pledge to discontinue the use of glyphosate for vegetation control on tracks starting in 2022. The company has also commissioned the world's first traction power wind energy plant and carried out its first climate risk and vulnerability analysis. In terms of social sustainability, ÖBB has increased the proportion of women in the company by 0.9% to 15.1% in 2022. The company has also developed 120 new e-learning, training, and teaching apps for employee training and education.

ÖBB has voluntarily implemented the highest European reporting standards years ahead of schedule, demonstrating its commitment to transparency and sustainability. The company has been providing information on its sustainability performance since 2006, with its 2021 Sustainability Report receiving the Austrian Sustainability Reporting Award (ASRA). In 2022, ÖBB strengthened its team of sustainability experts and established a new sustainability department to develop and operate an integrated sustainability performance indicator system, enabling more targeted implementation and efficient impact measurement of sustainability projects.
