The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) has placed an additional order for 21 Desiro ML electric trains from Siemens Mobility. The tender for the supply of electric rolling stock for regional services was announced in January 2021, after Bombardier Transportation (now part of Alstom) failed to build the ordered Talent 3 trains on time.
Siemens will build Desiro ML trains in Vienna and deliver them to ÖBB from the end of 2022 to the middle of 2023.
The first trains will arrive in Vorarlberg, where they will be used for regional transport. So far, from the autumn of 2021, it is planned to use an additional five Talent 1 trains in regional transport.
Alstom had to sell the products of Talent 3 trains in Henigsdorf, Germany by mid-2021, which was one of the conditions for the European Commission's approval for the takeover of Bombardier Transportation. However, this sale has not yet taken place.
