Alstom has signed a long-term agreement with ScotRail to support and modernise its Class 222 trains. The deal combines technical support, refurbishment, and digital upgrades aimed at improving reliability and passenger comfort across Scotland.

Alstom has entered into a 10-year Technical Support and Spares Supply Agreement (TSSSA) with ScotRail Trains Limited, covering the operation and maintenance support of the Class 222 fleet. The contract, valued at approximately £250 million, will run until March 2036, with an option to extend to 2042.

Under the agreement, Alstom will provide technical support, spare parts, and maintenance services for 22 five-car trains, alongside a broader programme aimed at improving reliability and operational performance. The deal forms part of a wider package agreed with Beacon Rail, the fleet owner, reinforcing long-term cooperation across maintenance, refurbishment, and storage.

Digital Systems and Safety Upgrades Across the Fleet

The programme includes a series of onboard technology upgrades designed to modernise the fleet and improve passenger services. These upgrades cover new passenger information systems, saloon media screens, and hearing aid announcement systems, alongside automatic passenger counting and upgraded CCTV.

Connectivity and security are also key priorities, with WiFi improvements and enhanced cybersecurity measures included in the package. In addition, every train will be equipped with defibrillators, strengthening onboard safety provisions.

Maintenance Network and Workforce Development

Maintenance and technical support activities will be delivered across several locations, including Polmadie, Haymarket, and Inverness. Alstom will provide engineers, technicians, supply chain support, and specialist tooling, as well as data hosting services to support fleet operations. The agreement also includes training programmes for drivers and maintenance teams, ensuring knowledge transfer and long-term operational readiness as the upgraded trains enter service.

Partnership with Beacon Rail Strengthens Delivery

The contract forms part of a broader collaboration with Beacon Rail, covering heavy maintenance, refurbishment, and storage of the Class 222 fleet. This integrated approach is intended to support a smooth transition of the trains into Scottish service while maintaining high operational standards.

Industry leaders highlighted the importance of the agreement for both service quality and long-term investment in the rail sector. The programme is expected to support skilled jobs, engineering capability, and supply chain development across the UK rail industry.
