Alstom Extends Long-Term Partnership with Indian Railways Through New Service Contract

Indian Railways has renewed its partnership with Alstom, awarding the company's joint venture a new five-year contract to maintain its fleet of WAG-12B electric freight locomotives. Worth €107 million, the agreement covers the maintenance of 250 locomotives at the Nagpur depot and builds on the successful delivery of the previous contract.

Alstom has announced that its joint venture with Indian Railways, Madhepura Electric Locomotive Private Limited (MELPL), has been awarded a new five-year maintenance services contract. Valued at €107 million, the agreement covers the comprehensive maintenance of 250 WAG-12B electric locomotives at the MELPL Nagpur Depot.

The contract renewal follows the successful execution of the previous four-year agreement and reflects Indian Railways' continued confidence in Alstom’s maintenance services. The Nagpur depot has become a benchmark for operational performance and collaboration within India's rail sector.

WAG-12B Fleet Supports India's Freight and Climate Goals

The 12,000 hp Prima T8 WAG-12B locomotives play a central role in India's strategy to modernise freight transport and reduce emissions.

Designed to haul 6,000-tonne freight trains at speeds of up to 120 km/h, the locomotives operate on the country's Dedicated Freight Corridors, increasing freight capacity while helping lower carbon emissions.

Full-Service Maintenance Across the Fleet

Under the agreement, MELPL will be responsible for the complete maintenance of both the 250 locomotives and the Nagpur depot infrastructure.

To maximise fleet availability and minimise downtime, Alstom will continue deploying its specialised Prompt Response Teams (PRTs) across strategic locations in India. Equipped with dedicated tools and spare parts, the teams are designed to resolve technical issues quickly and keep locomotives in service.

The contract also reinforces Alstom's commitment to workforce development, with ongoing training programmes for employees based at the Nagpur depot.
